American Heart Association Recommends TM for High Blood Pressure
An April 2013 report by the AHA concluded that the Transcendental Meditation technique lowers blood pressure and recommends that the TM technique be considered in clinical practice for the prevention and treatment of hypertension. The report stated that there is not enough scientific evidence to recommend any other meditation or relaxation technique.

Pamela Peeke, M.D, Assistant Professor of Medicine, on the Transformative Power of TM Practice
By 2010, the effectiveness of the Transcendental Meditation program had been validated by more than 600 scientific studies at more than 200 independent research institutions in 30 countries and further research on the benefits is published regularly.
The TM program is the program for the development of consciousness founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who said:
“Transcendental Meditation opens the awareness to the infinite reservoir of energy, creativity, and intelligence that lies deep within everyone. By enlivening this most basic level of life, Transcendental Meditation is that one simple procedure which can raise the life of every individual and every society to its full dignity, in which problems are absent and perfect health, happiness, and a rapid pace of progress are the natural features of life.”
The TM technique requires no belief or lifestyle change, is non-religious, is not time-consuming, and is easy to learn. It is a simple, natural, effortless procedure practiced for 15-20 minutes in the morning and evening while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. During this technique, the individual’s awareness settles down and experiences a unique state of restful alertness. As the body becomes deeply relaxed, the mind settles inward beyond thinking to experience the simplest form of awareness, Transcendental Consciousness, the most silent and peaceful level of the mind.
The research findings include:
- Increased happiness
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Increased intelligence and creativity
- Improved memory and focus
- Improved health and energy
- Reduced high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol
- Reduced insomnia
- Weight normalization
- Slowing of biological aging
- Improved relationships
The research on the benefits of the TM program has been published in such major scientific journals as Science, the American Journal of Physiology, Scientific American, Lancet, the Journal of Counseling Psychology, the International Journal of Neuroscience, Journal of the Canadian Medical Association, and the British Journal of Educational Psychology.
